Overview of Certifications
The following are international certifications that require candidates to pass stringent examinations, which are administered by the IIA SA on behalf of the international IIA Inc:
The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) - This is the Institute's premier qualification and the profession's most globally recognised and respected credential. The CIA designation indicates to employers that the internal auditor has a solid foundation of internal auditing knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge in the workplace. The CIA is awarded after four international examination papers have been passed with a minimum of 75% per paper. Specific education and experience requirements are required to gain admission to the examinations - either a relevant three-year degree or diploma and three years' relevant experience, OR a four-year degree or diploma plus two years' relevant experience.
Candidates must agree to adhere to the Code of Ethics. Those who have achieved the CIA designation must demonstrate ongoing professional commitment to the field by satisfying continuing professional development requirements (CPD).
The Certificate in Control Self Assessment (CCSA) - The CCSA certification indicates that these internal auditors have successfully completed the program for examining and assessing internal control effectiveness, and can facilitate workshops with management in this regard. Access requirements to the single three-and-a-half-hour examination include a relevant three-year degree or diploma, two years' relevant experience and at least seven hours of acceptable facilitation experience or 14 hours acceptable facilitation training.
The Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) is a specialist certification for internal auditors in the public sector. To be eligible to write the examination (a single three-and-a-half-hour paper), candidates must have a minimum of three years relevant experience in the public sector, as well as a relevant three-year degree or diploma.
The Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA) is a specialist certification that measures an individual's knowledge of, and proficiency in, audit principles and practices within the banking, insurance, and securities financial service industries.
